Pattern Play: Layered Designs

July 5, 2017

Hey! This is just a quick note to tell you my FIFTH (that’s number five, guys! Five!) Skillshare class, Pattern Play: Layered Designs, is on the books. In this course I show you a workflow for how to make surface patterns in Illustrator that have multiple layers of repeating motifs. The thing about layered repeats is the depth, interest, and sometimes…

Illustrator Basics: The Pen & Pencil Tool

May 24, 2017

Skillshare class no. 4 Illustrator Basics: The Pen & Pencil Tool is now live! Have you been dipping your toes in Illustrator and want to start working on illustrations built from your own drawings? This course lays the foundation for how to do just that. When I was learning Illustrator, I found the pen tool to be difficult and annoying at best….

Illustrator Basics: The Shape Builder Tool

May 5, 2017

Whew! I guess you could say I enjoy teaching on Skillshare 😌 I think that it’s just really easy for me to remember being a beginner. I’ve always been solid with computers, but before I got into graphic design I just assumed Photoshop, Illustrator, video editing, web coding, etc would be out of my league. That feeling of “holy crap! If…

Mazy’s Wonderland

May 1, 2017

Finally a bridge has been created that connects my design world to my sewing world. It hasn’t come out of nowhere, though. For the last year I’ve been slowly upgrading from merely gawking at lovely fabrics to trying to design them. Learning how repeats work, studying the fabrics that I’ve purchased and loved too much to cut into, and trying…

New Skillshare Class: Pattern Play!

April 3, 2017

Skillshare Class; Pattern Play: Combining Illustrator and Photoshop

I’ve been busy working on my second Skillshare class and had the joy of hitting “publish” over the weekend! Pattern Play: Combining Illustrator and Photoshop takes you through my workflow for creating patterns utilizing the strengths of both AI and PS. I love the ease of making shapes, building repeating tiles, and testing out color palettes in Illustrator, but Photoshop is incredible…

On Feeling Helpless

November 11, 2016

Wednesday was…tough. I felt a lot of feelings, but the most difficult was the helplessness I felt for myself and those that I love. I felt helpless for non-white people, people with disabilities, people who are gay, people who have immigrated here, people who aren’t members of the first class. I felt helpless for my future, and although our futures are…

Material Haul

November 4, 2016

It’s boring to listen to people talk about how busy they are, so I’ll keep it brief: I’m very busy with a project at work right now. As in, working before work, during work, and after work, and thinking about it while falling asleep. So my sewing adventures have been non-existent. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been dreaming up my next…

I’m Dylan

Bio Picture

And this is a living collection of the best things: illustrated wrapping paper, hand-designed greeting cards, sewing machine stitches, and probably pictures of flowers and pizza. I hope you get inspired to take on a project, even if it's just going through your pens and throwing out the crap ones. Either way, welcome.

  • A lot of creatives have asked me how and how long it took me to find my style. Here is some bad news: you can’t just go in search of a style and in two weeks whip something up. I’ve compared it before to finding your partner; too much force sort of strangles things. The other bad news is your “style” isn’t a destination or stationary place, it’s an always evolving challenge and joy to uncover. Here is some good news: it comes to you while you’re working. With every scratch on the page and weird cat drawn over and over again. It comes from paying attention to what you’re drawn to in the world, and finding ways to put that strange and intimate combination into your work. This piece is from almost two years ago and remains one of my favorites of all time. It’s the first time my weird colors clicked for me, and when I started to recognize and become comfortable (probably the wrong word) with a common thread that was emerging in my work. I could read every book, watch every class, and observe every great piece of work, yet nothing happens until I pick up my pencil.

  • Well hey! When did we last chat? One million years ago probably. I’ve been enjoying the company of visiting friends, finalizing my second fabric collection (just as Mazy starts to hit quilt shop shelves!), and wrapping up my first commission with Jennifer Nelson (phew!). I’ve been working hard to truly implement my word of 2019 “less”, and I’m happier for it. I will say though, without shame, that having less to share means I miss you guys more. It’s a tricky balance, the connection and the overstimulation. The encouragement and the comparison. So here’s an old piece that was recolored for new life, and an excuse to say hey to my friends. We’re in the second month of 2019 now, how is it going so far?

  • IT HAS BEEN DONE! Three hours and fifty three minutes of painting, painting, painting. If you’re where I was last year, feeling like you spent a bunch of money on supplies and have no idea how to use them with JOY, this class will show you how to find what you love most about watercolor, gouache, and acryla gouache! You can find the link in my profile; if you’re new to Skillshare, that link will also give you two months fo free 🙌✨❤️👏🏼👩🏼‍🎨
